A mate cup, a little yerba and time to enjoy it. If you are just starting out, this guide will help you through your first round.
What you need
- A clean mate cup and a bombilla.
- Your favourite yerba mate.
- Lukewarm water to moisten the yerba and hot water for pouring.
- A flask to keep the water warm.
If your mate cup is made from gourd or wood, prepare it before first use following the manufacturer's instructions. Wash glass, ceramic and steel cups before using them for the first time.
1. Add the yerba
Fill your cup between halfway and three-quarters full. The amount depends on the size of your cup and how you like your mate. Start with a small cup and adjust the amount to your taste.
2. Make a little slope
Cover the opening with your hand, tilt the cup and shake gently. Leave the yerba resting towards one side to form a slope, with a small space on the lower side.
3. Moisten gradually
Pour a little lukewarm water into the space. Let the yerba absorb it before inserting the bombilla. This creates a moist area while keeping some yerba dry for later pours.
4. Place the bombilla
Insert the bombilla into the moist area, resting it towards the bottom. Once it is in place, try not to move it or use it to stir: this helps it filter better.
5. Pour and enjoy
Use hot water that has not boiled. As a starting point, try 70–80 °C and adjust to your yerba and preferences. Pour small amounts beside the bombilla rather than wetting the whole surface at once.
When the flavour becomes weaker, moisten a little more of the yerba you kept dry. You do not need to fill the cup to the top with every pour.
Tips for your first round
- Too strong? Try a milder yerba and slightly lower the water temperature.
- Bombilla blocked? Avoid stirring the yerba and check that the filter suits the cut of your yerba.
- When you finish: remove the used yerba, clean the cup according to its material and let it dry thoroughly. Do not put it away damp.
